Obituary of Chucksey C. Spotts
SPOTTS, CHUCKSEY CHARLES LEONARD COWAN Age 68 of Horseheads, NY passed away on Monday November 2, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Chucksey was born June 1, 1947 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Boyd and Mary (Cowan) Spotts. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Barbara (Kosloski) Spotts, daughters and sons-in-law Kelly and Mike Burt and Katy and Darren Ascone, grandsons, Maximilian and Mason Keagle, Brandon Burt, granddaughters, Bella and Lilly Ascone, brothers and sisters-in-law, Bud and Diane Spotts and William and Sherry Spotts, nieces and nephews, Mary Ann and Mark Callahan (Chloe and Ethan), Beau and Shannon Spotts (Ronnie), Amy and Lance Clements (Brock). Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of caring friends. Chucksey graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1965. He enrolled in college but was drafted into the Army in 1966 and served in Vietnam where he was awarded a Purple Heart in 1967. Upon his return from military service in 1968, he graduated from Elmira College and taught in the Elmira City School District for 33 years. During that time, he touched many young lives not only in the classroom but also through sports activities. He devoted countless hours as the Girls Cross Country, winter and spring track coach at SHS from 1982 - 2002. He took pride in his teams and individual athletes who won numerous regional and state titles. Chuck enjoyed many activities, and was an avid snowboarder, runner, biker, rock climber and kayaker. He was inducted into the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.After retirement, Chuck worked with his brothers Bud and Bill in helping to build dozens of new homes in the Southern Tier. Chuck was true to his Scottish heritage. He and his wife, Barbara, joined the Caledonian Highlanders Pipe Band and participated in many marches and shows . He was a true believer in the adage "practice makes perfect" and was often seen walking around his neighborhood while playing his bagpipes. Chucksey was an avid dog lover and, over the years, enjoyed the companionship of his two devoted rotweillers, Burton and Jake. Family and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS,NY on Thursday, November 5, 2015 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Chucksey's Funeral Services will be held immediately following calling hours at 8PM with Deacon Dan Hurley Officiating. In lieu of flowers, those wishing, may remember Chuck through donations to the Vietnam Veterans War Museum 1200 Davis Street, Elmira, NY 14901. A private burial service will be held at the Woodlawn National Cemetery at the convenience of the family where Full Military Honors will be accorded Mr. Spotts.
