Obituary of William G. Stanton Stanton

STANTON , WILLIAM G. Age 94 formerly of Chemung , NY and Elmira Heights , NY passed away peacefully on Thursday December 3 , 2015 at Elcor Nursing Home in Horseheads , NY . Bill was born May 1 , 1921 in Elmira , NY the son of the late Dexter and Mary Ellsworth Stanton . He was a graduate of Waverly High School Class of 1939 . Bill worked for The Lehigh Railroad in Sayre , PA and went to Baseball Umpiring School in Florida and played professional baseball for three years. He married his wife , Donna C. Lilley Stanton , on June 6 , 1943 and she pre-deceased him on September 15 , 2008 after 65 years of marriage . Bill was a Veteran of World War II serving his country with The U.S. Army and was a member of The Clarence R. Oliver American Legion Post # 154 and a life-time member of The V.F.W Post # 6083 in Elmira Heights , NY . Bill loved baseball and coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Waverly , Horseheads , and Elmira Heights and was also an accomplished bowler for many years. He was an avid supporter of Thomas A. Edison High School and a fan of all their sports programs. Bill was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church , United Commercial Travelers and volunteer for Meals On Wheels and The American Red Cross in addition to donating blood on a regular basis . He was a Trustee for The Village of Elmira Heights during the 1980's . In addition to his parents and his wife , Bill was pre-deceased by his sisters , brothers , and their spouses . Bill was an Optical Technician for Winchester Optical in Elmira , NY with 32 years of dedicated sevice retiring in May 1986. He loved his family and friends and treasured the time he spent with them. Bill is survived by his son and daughter-in-law : Bruce & Diane Stanton of Horseheads , NY ; daughter and son-in-law : Brenda & Ted Trowbridge of Attleboro , MA ; granddaughters : Heather Trowbridge and Tricia Trowbridge both of Attleboro , MA ; several nieces, nephews , cousins , and a host of caring friends. Bill's Family would like to thank the entire staff of Elcor for their loving and compassionate care given Bill during his stay and a special thank you to Dr. Brian Cassetta of Guthrie . Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS , NY on Wednesday December 9 , 2015 from 5-7 PM . Mr. Stanton's Funeral and Committal Services will be held at the Funeral Home at the conclusion of calling hours with Rev. William Wells officiating. Bill will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Donna in Chemung Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
