I’m sorry for your loss. My father Gary Cooper was really good friends with him growing up in Ithaca. For the last year my dad had this picture of him hanging on his fridge. When I asked him who it was he told me with tears in his eyes who he was and how sad he was to find out he passed. My dad passed away 2 months ago and I am sure that they have found each other on the other side.

Joanne,
I was a student at Elmira College in 1971-72 and spent time at your home studying with Bob Sieben. I have too much to say about what Smitty did for my life and career and would love to be contacted by you to share.
So sorry to hear of his passing. Please email me.

Smithy was the kindest, most thoughtful man I have ever known. There will be a hole in my life left by his passing, but many great things filling my heart that came from knowing him. He was, and is, truly an angel.

What a tremendous loss to all who knew him. My deepest condolences to his wife and all his family. He touched so many people's lives and created so many positive changes, and yet had such humility about his influences and talents.May this legacy give some measure of comfort to his family and friends.I will miss you.

Just so sad at the passing of such a great person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joanne and the rest of the family during these especially emotional days.
I will never forget the first time Smitty bench pressed 300 lbs. at Club Naitilus in Horseheads; quite an impressive milestone and he was just beaming. And his wisdom and encouraging words were always so inspirational and appreciated.
Rest now in heaven my friend; you touched the lives of so many of us and we are better people for having known you!

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Smitty and his family. A good friend who will be remembered for his kindheartedness and his even temperament. We knew Smitty for at least 19 years, and will always have fond memories of our fun times during the many occasions that we were together.
May you be richly rewarded for your selfless community services and your willingness to help other people. Go in peace, our friend.

Smitty was one of a kind. He was my friend for 42 years and was someone who could always be counted on as an endless source of support and wisdom.
As his obituary shows, Smitty was more than just a good guy. He was a highly accomplished and respected leader, a champion of the little guy and a fearless friend to the powerless and disenfranchised in our community.
The many of us who knew him will always be proud of our association with him and to have called him our friend.
The community has lost a great man.
