Obituary of Lewis Herbert Walther

WALTHER , LEWIS H. JR. , M.D. Age 91 of Horseheads , NY passed away peacefully on Saturday February 11 , 2017 at The Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira , NY . Lewis was born August 28 , 1925 in Pittsburgh , PA the son of the late Lewis Herbert Walther and Anna Meuschke Walther . He married his wife , June Estelle Ritz Walther , on March 18 , 1950 and she pre-deceased him on October 23 , 2005 after 55 years of marriage. Dr. Walther received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and attended New York University of Medicine where he received Medical Certification in 1949. He completed his internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh , PA. Dr. Walther spent several months in Residency at Bellevue Hospital and a year's Residency in Internal Medicine at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre , PA . Dr. Walther served his country with The U.S. NAVY during World War II (1943-1945) and The Korean War from 1950-1952. During his later service , he was also affiliated with the U.S. Army serving at Fort Camel, Kentucky. Dr Walther operated a private family practice in Rockaway , N.J. for over 20 years. In 1976 he moved to Horseheads , NY where he worked with the CMS Outpatient and Emergency Group at The Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital . After retiring in 1989 he worked with Asthma and Allergy Associates in Elmira on a part-time basis for several years. An avid hunter and fisherman , Dr. Walther was a member of Fur , Fin , and Feather Sportsman's Club , The National Rifle Association , and The Ruffed Grouse Society , He was a passionate gardener , always sharing his overabundant crops with family, friends , and neighbors. Dr. Walther will always be remembered as a loving husband , father , grandfather and a caring and compassionate doctor . The family wishes to thank the 6th Floor staff of The Chemung County Nursing Facility for their excellent care and unending compassion and to a special friend , Craig Baravalle for his loyalty and dedication. In addition to his beloved wife June , Dr. Walther was also pre-deceased by his son Jeffrey L. Walther on March 17 , 2008 and his grandson Nickolas Adam Walther on September 22 , 2012 as well as his brothers and sisters. Dr Walther is survived is survived by his second wife Carolyn Stolze Walther ; son and daughter-in-law : Lewis Herbert Walther III & Darlene Walther of Rockaway , N.J. ; daughter and son-in-law : Carol Anne Walther Beber & Steven Beber of Big Flats , NY ; daughter-in-law : Karen Specchio Walther ( Mrs. Jeffrey L.) of Horseheads , NY ; grandchildren : Lewis Herbert Walther IV , Darryl Jason Walther , Dylan Lawrence Walther , Gregory Allen ( Brianne) Beber , and Daniel Kevin Beber ; great grandchildren : Carly Starr Donald-Walther and Aiden Jeffrey Walther ; several nieces , nephews , cousins , and a host of caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS , NY on Thursday February 16 , 2017 from 5-8 PM . Dr. Walther's Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday at 11 AM with Pastor Chip Possee officiating. Dr. Walther will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife June in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads , NY where Full Military Honors will be accorded Dr. Walther. In Lieu of flowers , the family requests that donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association in Lew's memory.
