My deepest condolences to the Crew family on the passing of Pete Crew. Pete was a great friend to my dad Bill Freeman, who worked as an investigator on many cases with Pete when he was the DA in Elmira. I remember Pete well from my high school years when he would go hunting or fishing with my Dad. I can remember Pete and my dad recalling the cases they worked on, and their shared love of the law and the outdoors. I have attached a photo of Pete with my Dad taken at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid from 1980. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to know Pete, and I know he will be greatly missed. May your fond memories provide comfort to your family.
With Sympathy,
Karen Freeman Moore

I am very sorry to read of Judge Crew's passing. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known him even a little. There are a few teachers through the course of my education that stand out and he is one. I first met him taking his Criminal Law class at Elmira College. I loved the class and I loved learning from him. He was an excellent teacher. I was so thankful when he agreed to write a letter of recommendation on my behalf for a scholarship application. It is a class that has always stood out to me as one of highlights of my college education. I had the opportunity to come in contact with him a few other times during the subsequent course of my career and through colleagues and I am thankful for and know that his influence on my career made me better.

My mom and dad, Richard & Dorothy Wandell, considered Pete a true friend and always spoke highly of him. I also have fond memories of Pete, starting from a boy and hearing him and my father go on with their war stories of police investigations and criminal prosecutions. As a college student, I learned much from him and enjoyed his unique teaching style in our constitutional law class at Elmira College. When I was a young officer, he was frequently a guest, or speaker, or instructor at various Elmira Police functions where he was quick with a story, joke, or some insightful knowledge that aided us in our careers. Pete was a great guy, with wonderful energy in life and a zeal for helping others. I know that he absolutely helped and inspired many of us in the criminal justice field, and so, we will miss him dearly. To the Crew family, we are sorry for your loss. From the Wandell family, please accept our most sincere condolences.
Respectfully,
James Wandell

Fran and Pete's entire family, please accept my sincere condolences. I was the court reporter for the Elmira Star-Gazette in the '70s and '80s. Always a fan of vocabulary, I loved listening to Pete expound; he was the William F. Buckley Jr. of prosecutors! As I just told DA Weeden Wetmore, I still remember a pretty close version of one of Pete's startling comments: "Your Honor, I think I can say without fear of contradiction that if you accept this plea, it will obviate the necessity of a protracted trial and spare the taxpayers the astronomical expense of prolonged litigation." I knew that for the rest of my life, I would strive for a Pete-level lexicon. Pete's main rival for vocab in the courtroom was the late Judge Sam Castellino, who once told a defense lawyer that his motion to dismiss was "specious and circumlocutious." Pete's obit mentions that he put on a puffy wig when he moved up to State Supreme Court, but he really didn't need one because, as Weed observed, Pete had a pretty good coif going there, didn't he? Another Pete classic was when he rained virtuosic verbiage on the jury in the Immortal Umbrella Analogy about circumstantial evidence; the Clemens Center itself has never seen a finer performance. Pete was a champion of peroration and the people! He made being in the courtroom fun again! In the Jurisprudential Realms of Heaven, he is mesmerizing the cherubim and seraphim with sesquipedalian tales of polemical power! Thanks for the lessons, Pete! --Tom Maguire, associate editor of the Catholic Sun, Syracuse

"Cynthia, please don't call me Mr. Crew, everytime you say that I start looking for My father". He'd call me on it every time I couldn't say "Pete". I didn't know until I came to the obituaries of his passing. What a Pillar to the community. My sincerest condolences to his family.z

Simply said, Pete changed my life. In 1986, I was graduating from Cornell Law School with a newborn baby girl. Pete hired me to be his law clerk and I was the first woman to serve in that capacity.
Because of what I learned from Pete about the law, and more important, how to treat others well and fairly in Court, I was emboldened to seek the office of Ithaca City Judge. I served in that position for over 20 years. When I retired, Pete surprised me by coming to speak at my send off.
My deepest condolences to Fran and all the family. A huge loss. Judge Judy Rossiter (retired).
