Obituary of Martin M. Sullivan
With a mixture of great sadness and thankfulness we announce the passing of Martin "Marty" Maley Sullivan – a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend who left us on May 21, 2023. Marty brought his smile, kindness and humor to all who had the good fortune to meet him.
Born on August 28, 1945, Marty was a graduate of Horseheads High School (1964), Corning Community College and Elmira College. He married his high school sweetheart, Patty, on November 5, 1966 shortly before leaving for the Mediterranean and then on to the coast of Vietnam. Marty was a Vietnam veteran who circled the globe while serving aboard the aircraft carriers the USS Intrepid and USS America. He was a volunteer firefighter with Tompkins Corners Volunteer Fire department for many years, as well as a paramedic with Erway Ambulance (#23) where he made many friends. Marty was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and long-time parishioner of St. Mary Our Mother Catholic Church in Horseheads. After retirement from Ralph W. Earl Company in Syracuse, Marty served as an officer and docent at the Vietnam Veterans Museum Chapter 803, and as a member of the Chemung County Honor Guard. As an avid golfer, he was often seen chasing the mowers with his golfing buddies while the grass was still wet with the morning dew. Marty is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Katherine; his siblings, Kitty (Pete), Annie (Fred), Tiney (Dick) and Michael (Cindy); his nephews, Larry, Tim, Matt and Brett; and his great-niece Jodie Kay.
Of all his accomplishments, it was as a father that Marty truly flourished. He was blessed with four wonderful children, whom he loved with every fiber of his being. His dedication to his family was immeasurable, and he worked tirelessly to provide them with a comfortable and loving home. Marty's unwavering support, gentle guidance, and unconditional love were the cornerstones of his role as a father, and he took immense joy in witnessing his children grow into compassionate, responsible adults.
As a hardworking provider, Marty always went above and beyond to ensure the well-being of his family. He tirelessly pursued his professional endeavors, often sacrificing his own comfort for the sake of his loved ones. Marty's commitment to excellence and his strong work ethic set an example for all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Marty will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Patty (née Sando), his children Marty and Kim, Mary, Patrick and Caitlin, and Sean, his grandchildren, Molly, Anthony, Ryan, Emma, Ellie, Céili, Colin, and little Fiona as well as extended family, and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances whose lives he touched in profound ways. We celebrate the remarkable life of Marty Sullivan, a man who left an indelible mark on our hearts and whose memory will forever be a blessing.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Elcor Nursing and Rehabilitation for the loving care Marty received, especially the wonderful people on Colonial Ridge West whose names are too numerous to mention. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS, NY on Friday May 26, 2023 from 3-6 PM.
